Product Description – This example is for one of the nicest humidors we’ve come across.  Circa 1940’s, this box has an eternal covering of leather which has been worn with wear over the years – but the best part is the top of the humidor which has a hand painting of a full size horse done in remarkable detail.  The box is signed Sitzler in the lower left hand of the box who specialized in this type of painting.  The artist,  C. Frederick Sitzler Jr.  was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., but lived in Brooklyn, N.Y.  Mr. Sitzler was a local artist who specialized in portraits and paintings of thoroughbred race horses and dogs.
Mr. Sitzler attended the Art Students League, the Parson School and the Grand Central School of Art, all in New York City.  He was a member of the Westfield Art Association.
During his professional career, Mr. Sitzler painted many of the most famous thoroughbred champions of the times including Native Dancer.  He was commissioned by the late Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge to paint her horses, Topper and Clover, as well as some of her favorite dogs.
The painting of the horse measure a full 9.5 inches in length  X 6.5 inches in height and really displays well.  The box itself measures 10 inches in length X 7.5 inches depth and 4 inches in height.  It is lined on the interior of the box for cigars as shown in the photo’s.

Provenance:  Purchased from an estate in Danville, Kentucky.  The family we purchased this from initially called us about a sugar chest they wanted to sell.  As is generally the case we ended up spending a bit more than we anticipated but came away with some really neat stuff.  This is one of several horse related items we purchased – hopefully more to come as we hope to return to Kentucky soon!
